Welcome to Day 11 of our 14-day journey through the Gospel of John! Today, we will explore the miraculous event of Jesus walking on water. This miracle not only demonstrates Jesus’ authority over nature but also provides deep assurance of His presence in times of fear and uncertainty. Let’s delve into John 6:16-21 and uncover the significance of Jesus’ words, “Do not be afraid.”
The Setting: A Stormy Night
In John 6:16-18, we learn that after the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus’ disciples go down to the lake, get into a boat, and set off across the Sea of Galilee for Capernaum. By now, it is dark, and Jesus has not yet joined them. As they row, a strong wind begins to blow, and the waters grow rough.
Jesus Walks on Water
In the midst of this stormy night, the disciples see Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water (John 6:19). They are understandably terrified, witnessing something beyond their comprehension. Jesus immediately reassures them, saying, “It is I; don’t be afraid” (John 6:20).
The phrase “It is I” (Greek: ego eimi) is significant, echoing God’s self-revelation to Moses in the burning bush (“I AM WHO I AM” – Exodus 3:14). By using this phrase, Jesus not only identifies Himself but also reveals His divine identity.
Peace in the Storm
Upon hearing Jesus’ reassuring words, the disciples are willing to take Him into the boat. Immediately, the boat reaches the shore where they are heading (John 6:21). This miraculous resolution of their journey highlights Jesus’ power and presence, bringing peace and calm to a chaotic situation.
