Day 21: Leaving a Legacy in Your Profession

Welcome to Day 21 of our 30-day journey through Purpose Driven Legacy. Today, we will explore how to leave a legacy within your profession. As Christians, our work is an extension of our faith and a platform for glorifying God. By integrating our values into our professional lives, we can make a lasting impact and leave a legacy that reflects our commitment to Christ.

Biblical Perspective on Work

The Bible emphasizes the importance of work and encourages us to perform our tasks with diligence and integrity. Colossians 3:23-24 reminds us, “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ” (KJV). Our work is an opportunity to serve God and others, and to demonstrate our faith through our actions.

Why Leaving a Professional Legacy Matters

  1. Reflects God’s Character: Our professionalism and integrity at work reflect God’s character and bring glory to Him. Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (KJV).
  2. Influences Others: Our actions and attitudes in the workplace can influence our colleagues and clients. By exemplifying Christ-like behavior, we can inspire others and create a positive environment. Proverbs 27:17 states, “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend” (KJV).
  3. Contributes to God’s Kingdom: Our work can contribute to the advancement of God’s kingdom. By using our skills and resources to serve others, we participate in God’s mission on earth. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them” (KJV).

Steps to Leaving a Legacy in Your Profession

  1. Work with Excellence

Strive for excellence in all you do, recognizing that your work is an offering to God. Proverbs 22:29 says, “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men” (KJV). Aim to do your best in every task, big or small.

  1. Maintain Integrity

Uphold high ethical standards and honesty in all your professional dealings. Proverbs 11:3 states, “The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them” (KJV). Your integrity will earn you respect and trust from others.

  1. Show Compassion and Kindness

Treat your colleagues, clients, and employees with compassion and kindness. Colossians 3:12 encourages us, “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering” (KJV). Your kindness can make a significant impact on the lives of others.

  1. Mentor and Support Others

Invest in the growth and development of others in your profession. Share your knowledge, provide guidance, and offer support. 2 Timothy 2:2 says, “And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also” (KJV).

  1. Be a Witness for Christ

Use your professional platform to share your faith and be a witness for Christ. 1 Peter 3:15 reminds us, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (KJV). Let your faith be evident in your words and actions.

  1. Seek God’s Guidance

Regularly seek God’s guidance in your professional decisions and actions. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (KJV). Trust God to lead you in your career and use you for His purposes.
