Day 1: The Call to Godly Leadership
Scripture Focus: Titus 1
Introduction
Leadership in the church isn’t just about holding a title—it’s about setting a godly example. In his letter to Titus, Paul lays out the qualifications for elders, emphasizing the importance of integrity, sound teaching, and a firm stand against falsehood. These principles aren’t just for pastors and elders; they apply to anyone who wants to be a faithful leader in their community.
The Need for Godly Leaders
Paul opens his letter by reminding Titus of his mission: to set things in order and appoint elders in every town (Titus 1:5). The early church faced opposition, deception, and cultural pressures—just like today. Godly leadership was essential then, and it remains essential now.
Qualities of a Godly Leader (Titus 1:6-9)
Paul lists key characteristics of an elder, which also serve as a model for Christian maturity:
✔ Above reproach – Living a life that doesn’t invite criticism.
✔ Faithful in marriage – Devoted to family and upholding biblical values.
✔ Self-controlled – Not ruled by anger, greed, or addiction.
✔ Hospitable – Welcoming and serving others.
✔ Holding firmly to sound doctrine – Teaching truth and refuting error.
These qualities reflect a heart transformed by Christ, not just outward behavior.
Confronting False Teaching (Titus 1:10-16)
Paul warns Titus that some people, especially those within the church, were spreading false doctrines for personal gain. He instructs leaders to rebuke them sharply (Titus 1:13) so that the church remains grounded in truth. This is a reminder that standing for truth sometimes requires courage, especially when deception comes from within.
Application: How Can We Lead Well?
- Examine Our Lives – Are we living in a way that honors God?
- Grow in Biblical Truth – Leadership requires a firm foundation in Scripture.
- Guard Against Falsehood – We must discern truth from deception.
- Be a Godly Example – Whether we lead in a church, workplace, or home, our lives should reflect Christ.
Final Thought
God calls every believer to a life of influence. You may not have a formal leadership role, but your faith, character, and commitment to truth impact those around you. As you reflect on Titus 1, ask yourself: What kind of leader am I becoming?
Reflection Question:
What steps can you take to strengthen your faith and become a godly leader in your community?
