Day 12: The Role of Values

Welcome to Day 12 of our 30-day journey through Purpose Driven Legacy. Today, we’re going to explore the role of values in shaping our actions and contributing to a lasting legacy. As Christians, our values are rooted in the teachings of the Bible and reflect our commitment to living a life that honors God.

The Foundation of Values

Values are the guiding principles that influence our decisions and behaviors. They reflect what is important to us and serve as a moral compass in our lives. For Christians, our values are grounded in Scripture and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life” (KJV). Our values shape our hearts and, consequently, our actions.

Why Values Matter

  1. Guide Our Actions: Values help us make decisions that align with God’s will and purpose for our lives. They provide a framework for discerning right from wrong and help us stay true to our faith. Psalm 119:105 states, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (KJV).
  2. Build Character: Living according to our values builds character and integrity. It shapes who we are and how we interact with others. Romans 12:2 encourages us, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (KJV).
  3. Influence Our Legacy: Our values have a profound impact on the legacy we leave behind. They influence how we treat others, the decisions we make, and the contributions we leave for future generations. Proverbs 22:1 reminds us, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold” (KJV).

Key Christian Values

Here are some key values rooted in Scripture that can guide us in living a life that honors God and contributes to a lasting legacy:

  1. Love: Jesus taught us to love God and love others. Love is the foundation of all Christian values. Matthew 22:37-39 says, “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (KJV).
  2. Integrity: Integrity means being honest and having strong moral principles. It reflects our commitment to living truthfully and righteously. Proverbs 10:9 states, “He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known” (KJV).
  3. Humility: Humility involves recognizing our dependence on God and valuing others above ourselves. Philippians 2:3-4 encourages us, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others” (KJV).
  4. Compassion: Compassion calls us to show kindness and empathy towards others, reflecting the love and mercy of Christ. Colossians 3:12 says, “Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering” (KJV).
  5. Faithfulness: Being faithful means being loyal and steadfast in our commitment to God and His teachings. 1 Corinthians 4:2 reminds us, “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful” (KJV).

Living Out Our Values

Living out our values requires intentionality and reliance on God’s strength. Here are some steps to help you live according to your values:

  1. Reflect on Scripture: Regularly read and meditate on the Bible to understand God’s values and how they apply to your life. Psalm 119:11 says, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (KJV).
  2. Pray for Guidance: Ask God to help you live according to His values. Seek His wisdom and strength in making decisions that honor Him. James 1:5 encourages us, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (KJV).
  3. Examine Your Actions: Regularly evaluate your actions and decisions to ensure they align with your values. 2 Corinthians 13:5 says, “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves” (KJV).
  4. Be Accountable: Surround yourself with fellow believers who can support and hold you accountable in living out your values. Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us, “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching” (KJV).
