Day 18: Financial Planning for Legacy
Welcome to Day 18 of our 30-day journey through Purpose Driven Legacy. Today, we will explore the importance of financial planning as part of building a legacy. As Christians, we are called to be good stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us. By managing our finances wisely, we can provide for our families, support our communities, and further God’s kingdom.
Biblical Foundation for Financial Stewardship
The Bible provides clear guidance on how to manage our finances in a way that honors God. Proverbs 21:20 says, “There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up” (KJV). This verse highlights the importance of wise financial management. By planning carefully, we can ensure that our resources are used effectively to build a lasting legacy.
Why Financial Planning Matters
- Provision for Family: Wise financial planning ensures that our families are cared for, both now and in the future. 1 Timothy 5:8 reminds us, “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel” (KJV).
- Generosity and Giving: Managing our finances well allows us to be generous and support those in need. 2 Corinthians 9:7 says, “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver” (KJV).
- Advancing God’s Kingdom: Financial resources can be used to support ministries, missions, and other efforts that advance God’s kingdom. Matthew 6:19-21 encourages us, “Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (KJV).
Steps for Effective Financial Planning
- Pray for Guidance
Begin with prayer, asking God for wisdom in managing your finances. James 1:5 reminds us, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him” (KJV). Seek God’s direction in all financial decisions.
- Create a Budget
Develop a budget that reflects your values and priorities. A budget helps you track your income and expenses, ensuring that you live within your means. Proverbs 27:23-24 advises, “Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?” (KJV).
- Save and Invest Wisely
Set aside savings for emergencies and future needs. Consider investing in ways that align with your values and goals. Proverbs 13:11 says, “Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase” (KJV).
- Get Out of Debt
Work towards eliminating debt to free yourself from financial burdens. Proverbs 22:7 reminds us, “The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender” (KJV). Aim to live debt-free to enhance your financial freedom and ability to give.
- Plan for the Future
Consider long-term financial goals such as retirement, education for children, and charitable giving. Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established” (KJV). Trust God with your plans and seek His guidance for the future.
- Be Generous
Incorporate generosity into your financial plan. Give regularly to your church, charities, and those in need. Acts 20:35 reminds us, “I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive” (KJV).
- Seek Professional Advice
Consider seeking advice from a Christian financial advisor who can help you make wise decisions that align with your faith and goals. Proverbs 15:22 says, “Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established” (KJV).
Living Out Financial Stewardship
By managing our finances wisely, we can build a legacy that reflects our commitment to God’s principles. Financial stewardship enables us to provide for our families, support our communities, and further God’s kingdom. Let us strive to be faithful stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us.
