Welcome to the first day of our study on Ephesians! Today, we explore Ephesians 1:1-14, where Paul introduces us to the spiritual blessings we have in Christ. Understanding these blessings is key to discovering our identity in Christ and living out our faith with confidence and joy.

Paul’s Greeting and Introduction

Paul begins his letter with a warm greeting: “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to God’s holy people in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 1:1-2). Paul establishes his authority as an apostle and extends grace and peace to his readers, setting a tone of encouragement and blessing.

Spiritual Blessings in Christ

Paul then launches into a beautiful hymn of praise, highlighting the spiritual blessings we have in Christ. In Ephesians 1:3-4, he writes, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.” These blessings include:

  • Chosen and Predestined: God chose us before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless. This emphasizes God’s intentional and loving plan for our lives.
  • Adopted as Children: In verses 5-6, Paul speaks of our adoption into God’s family through Jesus Christ. This adoption is a demonstration of God’s love and grace.
  • Redemption and Forgiveness: Through Christ’s sacrifice, we have redemption and forgiveness of sins (verse 7). This underscores the immense cost of our salvation and the depth of God’s mercy.
  • Revelation of God’s Will: God has made known to us the mystery of His will according to His good pleasure (verses 8-10). This reveals God’s desire for us to understand His purpose and plan.
  • Inheritance in Christ: We are marked with the Holy Spirit, guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession (verses 11-14). This gives us assurance and hope for the future.

The Mystery of God’s Will

One of the key themes in this passage is the revelation of the mystery of God’s will. Paul explains that God’s plan, which was hidden for ages, is now revealed in Christ. This plan includes bringing unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ. Understanding this grand narrative helps us see our place in God’s redemptive story and gives us a sense of purpose and belonging.

Conclusion

Ephesians 1:1-14 sets the stage for understanding our identity in Christ. Paul’s emphasis on the spiritual blessings we have in Christ helps us grasp the richness of God’s grace and the depth of His love for us. As we begin this study, let’s reflect on these blessings and how they shape our understanding of who we are in Christ.
