Welcome to Day 5 of our journey through Ephesians! Today, we explore Ephesians 3:1-13, where Paul speaks about the mystery of the gospel that has been revealed through his ministry. This passage helps us understand the inclusivity of God’s plan and the unsearchable riches of Christ available to all people.
Paul’s Ministry to the Gentiles
Paul begins by emphasizing his unique role in God’s plan. In Ephesians 3:1-2, he writes, “For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles—Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to me for you.” Paul describes himself as a prisoner, underscoring his dedication and the sacrifices he has made for the sake of the Gentiles.
The Mystery Revealed
Paul then explains the mystery that has been revealed to him by divine revelation. In Ephesians 3:3-6, he says, “That is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets. This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.”
The mystery is the inclusion of the Gentiles in God’s redemptive plan. Through Christ, Gentiles are now co-heirs, members of the same body, and partakers in the promises of God. This revelation breaks down the barriers between Jews and Gentiles and highlights the universal scope of the gospel.
The Unsearchable Riches of Christ
Paul continues by describing his mission to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ. In Ephesians 3:7-9, he writes, “I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace given me through the working of his power. Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ, and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.”
The “unsearchable riches of Christ” refer to the boundless, incomprehensible blessings and benefits that come from knowing and following Jesus. Paul’s mission is to make these riches known to all people, emphasizing the generosity and inclusivity of God’s grace.
God’s Eternal Purpose
Paul explains that the revelation of this mystery serves God’s eternal purpose. In Ephesians 3:10-11, he states, “His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.” The church plays a crucial role in revealing God’s wisdom and fulfilling His eternal purpose.
Confidence and Access in Christ
Paul concludes this section by reminding the believers of the confidence and access they have in Christ. In Ephesians 3:12-13, he writes, “In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence. I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory.”
This assurance encourages believers to approach God boldly, knowing that they are part of His divine plan and recipients of His abundant grace.
Conclusion
Ephesians 3:1-13 reveals the mystery of the gospel and the inclusivity of God’s redemptive plan. Through Paul’s ministry, we see that the gospel is for all people, breaking down barriers and inviting everyone to partake in the unsearchable riches of Christ. This passage challenges us to embrace the universal scope of the gospel and our role in sharing it.
