Welcome to Day 7 of our journey through Ephesians! Today, we delve into Ephesians 4:1-16, where Paul urges us to live a life worthy of our calling. This passage emphasizes unity within the body of Christ, the importance of spiritual maturity, and the role of spiritual gifts in building up the church.
Unity in the Body of Christ
Paul begins with a powerful exhortation: “As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:1-3). Paul calls us to reflect the character of Christ in our interactions with others, emphasizing humility, gentleness, patience, and love as the foundation for unity.
One Body, One Spirit
Paul underscores the importance of unity by highlighting the oneness of the church. In Ephesians 4:4-6, he writes, “There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” This passage reminds us that despite our differences, we are united by our common faith and shared identity in Christ.
The Role of Spiritual Gifts
Paul then shifts to discussing the diversity of spiritual gifts given to believers. In Ephesians 4:7-13, he explains, “But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it… So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
Spiritual gifts are given to each believer for the purpose of serving and building up the church. These gifts contribute to the unity and maturity of the body of Christ. Paul emphasizes that these roles—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers—are meant to equip believers for ministry and help the church grow in faith and knowledge of Christ.
Growing in Maturity
In Ephesians 4:14-16, Paul stresses the importance of spiritual maturity: “Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”
Spiritual maturity involves stability in faith, discernment of truth, and growth in love. As we mature, we become more like Christ and contribute to the health and growth of the church. Each member plays a vital role in supporting and building up the body of Christ.
Conclusion
Ephesians 4:1-16 calls us to live a life worthy of our calling by fostering unity, using our spiritual gifts to serve others, and striving for spiritual maturity. Paul’s teachings remind us that we are part of one body, united by our faith in Christ, and each of us has a role in building up the church.
