Day 6: Walking in the Spirit
In Romans 8, Paul contrasts two ways of living: according to the flesh or according to the Spirit. As believers in Christ, we are called to walk in the Spirit, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts, actions, and desires. Romans 8:5-6 explains it this way: “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”
What Does It Mean to Walk in the Spirit?
Walking in the Spirit means living under the guidance and influence of the Holy Spirit. It’s about allowing God’s Spirit to shape our decisions, attitudes, and responses. Instead of following our own sinful desires, we yield ourselves to the Spirit’s leading.
The Spirit empowers us to live out God’s will, to resist temptation, and to bear spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22-23). It’s an ongoing process, where each day we choose to follow the Spirit instead of relying on our own strength. This leads to a life of peace, joy, and purpose, as opposed to the chaos and emptiness that comes from following the flesh.
Living According to the Flesh vs. Living According to the Spirit
Paul makes a clear distinction between the life lived according to the flesh and the life lived according to the Spirit. The flesh refers to our sinful nature, the part of us that wants to live independently of God and follow our own desires. It leads to sin, frustration, and ultimately spiritual death.
Living according to the Spirit, on the other hand, leads to life and peace. The Spirit empowers us to break free from sinful patterns and live in a way that pleases God. Walking in the Spirit doesn’t mean we’ll never struggle, but it does mean we now have the power to overcome temptation and live victoriously in Christ.
How to Walk in the Spirit
- Surrender Daily: Walking in the Spirit requires a daily surrender to God’s will. Each day, we must consciously choose to follow the Spirit’s leading instead of our own desires. It’s about waking up and saying, “God, I give you control. Lead me today.”
- Stay in the Word: The Holy Spirit speaks through God’s Word. As we study Scripture, we become more attuned to the Spirit’s voice, recognizing when He is leading us in a particular direction. The Bible serves as the foundation for living according to the Spirit.
- Pray for Guidance: Prayer is essential for walking in the Spirit. When we pray, we invite the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us. Ask God to give you wisdom and discernment in your decisions, and trust that the Spirit will lead you in truth.
- Resist the Flesh: Walking in the Spirit requires resisting the pull of the flesh. When temptations arise, we need to rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to help us overcome them. This may involve removing ourselves from situations that lead to sin, turning to Scripture for strength, or seeking accountability from fellow believers.
- Be Sensitive to the Spirit’s Prompting: The Holy Spirit often prompts us in subtle ways—whether it’s a sense of conviction, an urging to take a specific action, or a reminder of a Scripture. Being sensitive to these promptings helps us walk more closely with the Spirit.
The Benefits of Walking in the Spirit
Paul explains that those who live according to the Spirit experience “life and peace” (Romans 8:6). When we walk in the Spirit, we are living in alignment with God’s will, which brings a sense of peace and fulfillment that the world cannot offer. The Spirit also produces fruit in our lives, such as love, joy, patience, kindness, and self-control, which enrich our relationships and impact those around us (Galatians 5:22-23).
Additionally, walking in the Spirit strengthens our ability to resist sin. Romans 8:13 says, “For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.” The Spirit empowers us to put sinful habits to death and live in freedom.
How This Applies to Us Today
Walking in the Spirit is not a passive process. It requires daily intentionality, choosing to surrender to God and live according to His ways. In a world that constantly pulls us in different directions, walking in the Spirit helps us stay grounded in our faith and experience true life and peace.
Reflect on areas of your life where you might be relying on your own strength or following the desires of the flesh. How can you invite the Holy Spirit to take the lead in those areas?
Reflection Questions:
- What does walking in the Spirit look like in your daily life? Are there areas where you find it challenging to follow the Spirit’s leading?
- How can you be more intentional about surrendering your desires and choices to the Holy Spirit?
- What specific steps can you take to better listen to and follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance?
Final Thought
Walking in the Spirit is the key to living a life that reflects Christ. It’s about surrendering our own desires, listening to the Spirit’s voice, and allowing God to shape us into the people He created us to be. As we walk in the Spirit, we experience the life, peace, and freedom that come from living in alignment with God’s will. Let’s commit to taking those steps each day, knowing that the Holy Spirit is with us, guiding us toward God’s good and perfect plan.
