Day 1: Introduction to Philippians
Passage: Philippians 1:1-11
Focus: Greeting and Thanksgiving
Welcome to the first day of our journey through Philippians! Today, we begin by understanding the background and themes of Paul’s letter to the Philippians, starting with his greeting and expression of gratitude.
Background
The apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church in Philippi while he was imprisoned, likely in Rome. Despite his challenging circumstances, Paul’s letter is filled with joy and thanksgiving. The church in Philippi was close to Paul’s heart, and his gratitude for their support shines throughout this passage.
Key Themes: Joy and Thanksgiving
Paul opens his letter with a heartfelt prayer of thanksgiving, expressing his joy for the Philippians’ partnership in the gospel (Philippians 1:3-5). He acknowledges God’s work in their lives, confident that He will continue to grow their faith (Philippians 1:6). This reminds us that no matter what we face, we can find joy in the partnership we have with fellow believers and the ongoing work God is doing in our hearts.
Reflection
Think about the relationships in your life—friends, family, your church community. Like Paul, are you grateful for these partnerships in faith? How often do you thank God for the people He has placed in your life who support and encourage your walk with Him?
Application
Today, take a few minutes to reflect on those who have been a source of encouragement in your faith journey. Write down their names and thank God for them. Consider reaching out to one person today, expressing your gratitude and sharing how they’ve impacted your life.
Prayer
Dear Lord, thank You for the people You have placed in my life who help me grow in my faith. Like Paul, I am grateful for the partnership we share in spreading Your gospel. Help me to see opportunities to encourage others and reflect Your joy in all circumstances. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
