Day 4: Imitating the Humility of Christ
Passage: Philippians 2:1-11
Focus: The Example of Christ’s Humility
On Day 4 of our study, we turn our attention to one of the most profound passages in the New Testament: the call to imitate Christ’s humility. Paul reminds us that the path of true Christian living is found not in seeking our own glory but in following the example of Jesus, who humbled Himself and became obedient, even to the point of death.
Key Themes: Humility and Unity in Christ
In Philippians 2:1-4, Paul encourages believers to live in harmony by being united in love, purpose, and humility. He challenges us to “do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit” and to “value others above yourselves” (Philippians 2:3). This is a call to selflessness—a central aspect of Christian love and community.
The greatest example of this selflessness is found in Jesus Himself. Paul beautifully describes how Jesus, though He was equal with God, did not cling to His divine rights but “made himself nothing” (Philippians 2:6-7). He took on human form and became obedient to the Father, even unto death on the cross (Philippians 2:8). This act of supreme humility and sacrifice is the model for how we are to live.
Because of His obedience and humility, God exalted Jesus, giving Him the name above every name (Philippians 2:9-11). As believers, we are called to follow in this path of humility, trusting that God will honor our obedience in His time.
Reflection
Are there areas in your life where pride or selfish ambition are holding you back from fully embracing the humility of Christ? How can you intentionally lower yourself in service to others, just as Christ did for us?
Application
Today, consider one specific way you can serve someone else in humility—whether it’s a family member, friend, or coworker. Look for an opportunity to put someone else’s needs above your own and practice selflessness, trusting that God sees your humble obedience.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for the incredible example of humility You displayed in coming to earth and giving Your life for us. Help me to walk in humility, putting others before myself and serving them with love. Forgive me for the times I have acted out of selfish ambition, and teach me to follow Your example daily. In Your name, Amen.
