Day 8: Pressing On Toward the Goal

On Day 8, we explore Paul’s encouragement to “press on” toward the goal of knowing Christ fully and receiving the heavenly prize that awaits us. This passage is about perseverance, determination, and keeping our focus on Christ as we journey through life.

Paul begins by humbly admitting that he hasn’t yet attained perfection, but that doesn’t discourage him from pressing forward. He writes, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me” (Philippians 3:12). Paul’s focus is not on what’s behind him, but on the future and the eternal reward found in Christ.
In Philippians 3:13-14, Paul emphasizes the importance of forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. He uses the image of an athlete running a race, pushing toward the finish line to receive the prize. This metaphor serves as a powerful reminder that our Christian walk is a journey, and we must remain focused on the ultimate goal: knowing Christ and attaining eternal life with Him.
Paul also warns about those who live as “enemies of the cross of Christ” (Philippians 3:18), whose minds are set on earthly things. Instead, he calls believers to remember that their citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). Our eyes should always be set on the eternal, knowing that Christ will transform us and bring us into His glory.

Application
Today, identify one area of your life where you’ve been holding on to the past—whether it’s past failures, hurts, or regrets. Take a step forward by asking God to help you release those things and commit to focusing on the future He has planned for you.
Prayer
Lord, help me to forget what is behind and to press on toward the goal of knowing You more fully. Give me the strength and determination to push forward in my walk with You, even when the journey gets tough. Keep my eyes fixed on my heavenly calling, and help me to live each day in light of eternity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
