Day 12: Paul’s Thorn in the Flesh
Scripture Focus: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
Devotional:
In 2 Corinthians 12, Paul speaks of a mysterious “thorn in the flesh”—a weakness or affliction that he asked God to remove three times. Yet, rather than removing it, God responded with a profound truth: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul came to understand that his weakness was not a hindrance but an opportunity for God’s power to be revealed in his life.
This passage reminds us that we all face challenges, struggles, and limitations that we wish God would take away. Like Paul, we may pray repeatedly for relief, but sometimes God’s answer is not to remove the problem but to give us the grace to endure it. God’s strength shines through in our weakness, and it’s often in our most difficult moments that we experience His power the most profoundly.
Paul’s response to this revelation is one of humility and acceptance. He chooses to boast in his weaknesses so that the power of Christ may rest upon him. This is a radical shift in perspective—rather than being discouraged by his limitations, Paul rejoices in them, knowing that they draw him closer to God. It’s a reminder to us that our weaknesses, rather than disqualifying us, make space for God to work in ways we never imagined.
Reflection:
- Are there areas in your life where you feel weak or inadequate? How does the truth of God’s grace being sufficient encourage you in those moments?
- How can you shift your perspective to see your weaknesses as opportunities for God’s power to be revealed?
Application:
Today, take time to reflect on any areas in your life where you feel weak or inadequate. Instead of asking God to remove those challenges, ask Him for the grace to endure them and to reveal His power through them. Write down a few areas where you feel limited and pray that God’s strength would be made perfect in your weakness. Look for ways in which God is using those struggles to deepen your dependence on Him.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for reminding us that Your grace is sufficient for us in every circumstance. We admit that we often want our weaknesses and struggles to be removed, but we trust Your plan and know that You work through our limitations. Help us to embrace our weaknesses, knowing that Your power is made perfect in them. Teach us to rely on Your strength, not our own, and may Your glory be revealed through our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
