Day 6: Freedom in Christ

Focus: Freedom from Legalism
Key Passage: Colossians 2:16-23

As we move forward in our study of Colossians, today’s focus is on one of the most powerful aspects of the Christian life—freedom in Christ. In this passage, Paul addresses the dangers of legalism and asceticism, encouraging believers to embrace the freedom that Christ has secured for them. The message of freedom is central to the gospel and has real implications for how we live out our faith.

Don’t Be Judged by Human Standards

Paul begins by warning the Colossians not to let anyone judge them based on external religious practices such as dietary laws, observing religious festivals, or following certain rules and regulations (Colossians 2:16). These practices, rooted in Jewish tradition, were being promoted by some as necessary for spiritual growth or salvation.

However, Paul emphasizes that these are merely “a shadow of the things that were to come” (Colossians 2:17). The reality is found in Christ. All of these religious rituals were intended to point toward the coming of Christ, but now that He has come, they are no longer necessary. Christ fulfilled the law, and through His sacrifice, we are no longer bound by it.

Freedom from Asceticism

In addition to legalism, some false teachers were promoting asceticism—strict self-denial and harsh treatment of the body—as a way to achieve spiritual enlightenment (Colossians 2:18-23). Paul warns the Colossians that these practices may appear to be spiritual, but they are ultimately based on “human commands and teachings” (Colossians 2:22) rather than the gospel.

Such practices give the appearance of wisdom, but they lack any real power to change the heart or draw us closer to God (Colossians 2:23). True spiritual transformation doesn’t come through self-imposed rules or harsh discipline; it comes through faith in Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

True Freedom in Christ

At the heart of this passage is the reminder that Christ has set us free from the bondage of legalism and human regulations. Our relationship with God is not based on following a set of rules, but on faith in Christ’s finished work on the cross. Paul makes it clear that believers have died with Christ to the “elemental spiritual forces of this world” (Colossians 2:20). We are no longer subject to the world’s rules about what we must do to be “good enough.”

True freedom in Christ means that we no longer have to strive for approval or righteousness through our own efforts. Instead, we can rest in the knowledge that Jesus has already made us right with God. This freedom empowers us to live in grace, not out of fear or obligation.

Living Out Our Freedom

While we are free from the constraints of legalism, this freedom does not mean we are free to do whatever we please. Paul’s message is not one of license to sin but of living a life that is rooted in Christ, empowered by His grace, and guided by the Holy Spirit. The freedom we have in Christ should lead us to love, serve, and live in a way that reflects His character.

This passage also challenges us to evaluate whether we are adding unnecessary burdens to ourselves or others. Are we trying to measure our worth by how well we follow religious rules or outward practices? Are we imposing legalistic standards on ourselves or on others, thinking that it will make us more spiritual?

Reflection

How does the idea of freedom in Christ resonate with you? Are there areas where you feel like you’re striving to earn God’s favor through your own efforts? Do you find yourself imposing unnecessary rules on yourself or others? What does it mean to live out your freedom in a way that honors Christ?

Application

Today, reflect on your understanding of freedom in Christ. Consider these questions:

  • In what ways have I been relying on legalism or outward practices to feel more spiritual or acceptable to God?
  • How can I more fully embrace the freedom that Christ has given me?

Call to Action

Take time today to rest in the freedom that Christ offers. If there are legalistic practices or self-imposed rules that you’ve been following, release them to God. Embrace the truth that your relationship with Him is based on grace, not performance.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for the freedom You’ve given me through Your death and resurrection. Help me to let go of any legalism or self-imposed rules that I’ve been holding onto. Teach me to live in the freedom of Your grace, trusting that You have made me right with God through Your sacrifice. Guide me to live a life that honors You and reflects Your love and freedom to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
