Day 1: Introduction to Colossians

Focus: Background and Context
Key Passage: Colossians 1:1-2

Welcome to Day 1 of our journey through the book of Colossians! Over the next 10 days, we will explore the powerful themes and life-transforming truths found in this New Testament letter written by the apostle Paul. Colossians is packed with profound insights on the supremacy of Christ, spiritual growth, and practical Christian living, making it incredibly relevant for us today.

Background of Colossians

The book of Colossians was written by Paul while he was imprisoned in Rome around 60-62 AD. It was addressed to the church in Colossae, a city in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), and is considered one of Paul’s “prison epistles.” Paul wrote to encourage the Colossian believers and address challenges they were facing, particularly the rise of false teachings.

The Colossian church was being influenced by a mix of Jewish legalism, pagan mysticism, and ascetic practices, which threatened to distort the pure message of the gospel. Paul wrote this letter to remind the Colossians of the true gospel and to emphasize the supremacy and sufficiency of Christ as the foundation of their faith.

Themes We Will Explore

Throughout this series, we’ll dive deeper into the following key themes from Colossians:

  • The Supremacy of Christ: Paul stresses that Christ is the image of the invisible God and the head over all creation. Christ’s preeminence should guide our faith and actions.
  • Spiritual Growth: Paul’s prayers and encouragements highlight the importance of maturing in our faith and knowledge of God’s will.
  • Practical Christian Living: The letter provides practical guidance on how believers are to live out their faith in relationships, work, and community.

Reflection

Think about the spiritual challenges you face today. Just as the Colossians encountered false teachings and cultural pressures, we too face temptations to compromise our faith. Are there influences in your life that draw you away from the centrality of Christ? What areas of your life do you want to grow in as we go through this series?

Application

As we begin our journey through Colossians, take time to reflect on your own spiritual walk. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Is Christ truly at the center of my life?
  • Are there beliefs or practices I need to examine in light of Scripture?
  • How can I prepare my heart for spiritual growth in the days ahead?

Call to Action

Commit to spending time with God each day over the next 10 days. As we study the book of Colossians, ask God to open your heart to His truth, grow your faith, and deepen your relationship with Christ.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the opportunity to dive into the book of Colossians. As we begin this journey, help me to keep my heart open to Your teachings. Reveal any areas in my life where I need to grow, and guide me to make Christ the center of all I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
