Day 5: Avoiding Division and Staying on Mission

Scripture Focus: Titus 3:9-15

Introduction

One of the greatest threats to the mission of the church is division. Throughout history, unnecessary arguments, pride, and distractions have weakened the impact of Christian communities. Paul’s final words to Titus emphasize the importance of avoiding foolish debates, staying focused on good works, and supporting one another in the faith.

Avoiding Foolish Arguments (Titus 3:9-11)

Paul warns against getting caught up in controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law (v. 9). These arguments do nothing but create division and are “unprofitable and worthless.”

Not all debates are beneficial – Some discussions help deepen our faith, but others only cause division.
Avoid distractions – Satan often uses unnecessary arguments to pull us away from what truly matters.
Reject divisive people – Paul advises Titus to warn divisive individuals twice before removing them from the community (v. 10-11). Sometimes, maintaining unity requires difficult decisions.

As believers, we are called to stand firm on biblical truth, but we must also know when to walk away from fruitless arguments.

Staying Committed to Good Works (Titus 3:12-14)

Paul shifts the focus back to what truly matters—good works and meeting urgent needs. He encourages believers to be fruitful, not distracted.

Support fellow workers in Christ – Paul names specific people (Artemas, Tychicus, Zenas, and Apollos) who are part of the mission. The church is a team effort.
Meet urgent needs – Christianity is practical; our faith should lead to action.
Be fruitful, not unproductive – Paul repeatedly emphasizes that believers should devote themselves to good works (v. 14).

A church that focuses on serving others and staying mission-minded will remain strong and effective.

Final Greetings and the Power of Community (Titus 3:15)

Paul closes the letter with a personal touch: “All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all.”

Christianity is not meant to be lived alone – We need each other for encouragement, accountability, and mission.
Grace holds us together – Everything we do is fueled by God’s grace, not our own strength.

Application: How Can We Stay Focused on the Mission?

  1. Avoid Distractions – Don’t waste energy on unnecessary debates.
  2. Pursue Good Works – Focus on serving others and making an impact.
  3. Promote Unity – Encourage and support fellow believers.
  4. Rely on Grace – Our strength to serve comes from God’s grace, not our own efforts.

Final Thought

Paul’s letter to Titus is a powerful reminder that healthy Christian communities are built on truth, grace, and action. As you reflect on this study, ask yourself: Am I focused on what truly matters?

Reflection Question:

What distractions do you need to let go of so you can stay focused on living out your faith?
