Day 1: The Story of Onesimus – A Runaway Transformed

Scripture Focus: Philemon 1-7

Introduction

The book of Philemon is one of the shortest letters in the New Testament, yet it carries a powerful message of transformation, grace, and reconciliation. At the heart of this letter is Onesimus, a runaway slave whose encounter with the Apostle Paul changed his life forever.

Today, we begin our 5-day journey by exploring the background of Onesimus, the circumstances that led him to Paul, and how God turned his failure into purpose.

Who Was Onesimus?

Onesimus was a slave who belonged to Philemon, a Christian leader in Colossae. At some point, Onesimus ran away, possibly stealing from his master in the process (Philemon 18). In the Roman world, this was a serious offense—runaway slaves could face severe punishment, even death.

Yet, in God’s providence, Onesimus’ flight led him to Paul, who was imprisoned at the time. Through this divine encounter, Onesimus became a believer in Christ.

A Divine Appointment (Philemon 1-7)

Paul opens his letter by addressing Philemon, commending him for his love and faith. But behind these words is a bigger mission—Paul is about to ask Philemon to do something radical: to forgive and welcome Onesimus as a brother in Christ.

God uses our failures – Onesimus’ escape seemed like rebellion, but God turned it into redemption.
No one is too lost for God – If a runaway slave can become a servant of Christ, so can we.
Encounters with Christ change everything – Onesimus didn’t just meet Paul; he met Jesus.

Application: How Does This Relate to Us?

  1. We all have a past – Like Onesimus, we may have run from our responsibilities or made mistakes.
  2. God is always working behind the scenes – Even in our lowest moments, He is drawing us toward Him.
  3. Salvation transforms us – Meeting Jesus changes not just our eternity, but our purpose on earth.

Final Thought

Onesimus’ story is one of hope—that no matter where we’ve been or what we’ve done, God can redeem and restore us. As we continue this study, we’ll see how Paul advocates for Onesimus and how grace triumphs over guilt.

Reflection Question:

Have you ever had a moment where God turned your mistakes into something good? How does Onesimus’ story encourage you?
