Welcome to Day 13 of our 14-day journey through the Gospel of John! Today, we will explore Jesus’ profound teaching on the Good Shepherd. This passage reveals the intimate relationship between Jesus and His followers, emphasizing His care, protection, and sacrificial love. Let’s delve into John 10:1-30 and uncover the significance of Jesus as the Good Shepherd.
The Good Shepherd
In John 10:1-5, Jesus begins by contrasting the Good Shepherd with false shepherds. He explains that the true shepherd enters by the gate, while thieves and robbers climb in another way. The sheep listen to the shepherd’s voice, and he calls them by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.
Jesus the Gate
Jesus further explains in John 10:7-10, “I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
This imagery of Jesus as the gate highlights His role as the only way to salvation and the abundant life He offers. Unlike false shepherds, who harm and exploit, Jesus provides security and nourishment.
The Good Shepherd’s Sacrifice
In John 10:11-15, Jesus declares, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.
“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.”
Here, Jesus emphasizes His sacrificial love and commitment to His followers. Unlike hired hands, who flee in the face of danger, Jesus willingly lays down His life to protect and save His sheep.
One Flock, One Shepherd
Jesus also speaks of bringing other sheep into the fold: “I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd” (John 10:16). This statement points to the inclusion of Gentiles in God’s salvation plan, uniting all believers under one shepherd.
Assurance and Security
In John 10:27-30, Jesus provides assurance and security to His followers: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”
These verses highlight the eternal security and protection Jesus offers to His sheep. Believers are secure in His hands, and nothing can separate them from His love and care.
Reflection and Application
As we reflect on Jesus’ teaching about the Good Shepherd, consider the depth of His love and commitment to His followers. Jesus is not only our protector but also our provider and sacrificial savior.
