Welcome to Day 14, the final day of our journey through the Gospel of John! Today, we will explore the powerful story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. This miracle not only demonstrates Jesus’ authority over life and death but also provides deep insights into His identity and the hope of resurrection. Let’s delve into John 11:1-44 and uncover the significance of Jesus as the Resurrection and the Life.

The Death of Lazarus

In John 11:1-3, we learn that Lazarus, a man from Bethany and the brother of Mary and Martha, is seriously ill. The sisters send word to Jesus, saying, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” Despite this urgent message, Jesus stays where He is for two more days, explaining that Lazarus’ sickness will not end in death but is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it (John 11:4-6).

Jesus’ Arrival in Bethany

When Jesus finally decides to go to Bethany, He tells His disciples that Lazarus is dead, but He is going to awaken him (John 11:11-14). By the time Jesus arrives, Lazarus has been in the tomb for four days, and many Jews have come to comfort Mary and Martha (John 11:17-19).

Jesus and Martha

Martha goes out to meet Jesus and expresses her grief and faith: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask” (John 11:21-22). Jesus responds, “Your brother will rise again” (John 11:23). Martha acknowledges the future resurrection at the last day, but Jesus makes a profound declaration: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26). Martha affirms her faith in Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God (John 11:27).

Jesus and Mary

Mary also comes to Jesus, weeping, and expresses the same sentiment as Martha: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died” (John 11:32). Moved by her grief and the mourning of those with her, Jesus is deeply troubled and weeps (John 11:33-35). This moment highlights Jesus’ compassion and empathy.

The Miracle

Jesus goes to the tomb and instructs the people to take away the stone. Despite Martha’s concern about the odor, Jesus reminds her to believe and see the glory of God (John 11:39-40). After praying, Jesus calls out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” (John 11:43). Lazarus emerges from the tomb, still wrapped in grave clothes, and Jesus instructs the people to take off the grave clothes and let him go (John 11:44). This miracle astounds the onlookers and leads many to believe in Jesus (John 11:45).

Reflection and Application

As we reflect on the raising of Lazarus, consider the themes of life, resurrection, and faith. Jesus’ declaration, “I am the resurrection and the life,” offers hope and assurance of eternal life for all who believe in Him.

Questions for Reflection:

  1. How does Jesus’ declaration, “I am the resurrection and the life,” impact your understanding of life and death?
  2. In what areas of your life do you need to experience Jesus’ power to bring new life and hope?
  3. How can you share the message of resurrection and life with others, offering them the hope found in Jesus?

Take time today to meditate on the significance of Jesus as the Resurrection and the Life. Reflect on the hope and assurance He provides, and consider how you can live out this truth in your daily life, bringing hope to those around you.
