Welcome to Day 11 of our journey through Ephesians! Today, we explore Ephesians 6:10-20, where Paul describes the full armor of God. This passage equips us for spiritual warfare, emphasizing the importance of standing firm in our faith and utilizing the divine resources God provides to protect us and enable us to live victoriously.

Standing Firm in Spiritual Battle

Paul begins with a call to strength and preparation. In Ephesians 6:10-11, he writes, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” Paul reminds us that our strength comes from the Lord and that we must actively equip ourselves with His armor to stand against spiritual attacks.

Recognizing the Real Enemy

Paul emphasizes the spiritual nature of our struggle. In Ephesians 6:12, he states, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Our true enemy is not other people but the spiritual forces of evil that seek to undermine our faith and hinder God’s work in our lives.

The Full Armor of God

Paul outlines the specific pieces of the armor of God, each of which symbolizes a key aspect of spiritual defense and readiness:

  1. The Belt of Truth: “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist” (Ephesians 6:14a). Truth is foundational to our defense against deception and falsehood. Knowing and living by God’s truth holds everything together.
  2. The Breastplate of Righteousness: “With the breastplate of righteousness in place” (Ephesians 6:14b). Righteousness protects our hearts from the accusations and temptations of the enemy, enabling us to live with integrity.
  3. The Shoes of Peace: “And with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace” (Ephesians 6:15). The gospel of peace grounds us, providing stability and readiness to share God’s message of reconciliation and hope.
  4. The Shield of Faith: “In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:16). Faith acts as a shield, protecting us from doubt, fear, and spiritual attacks. It helps us trust in God’s promises and power.
  5. The Helmet of Salvation: “Take the helmet of salvation” (Ephesians 6:17a). Salvation guards our minds, giving us assurance and confidence in our identity and future in Christ.
  6. The Sword of the Spirit: “And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17b). God’s Word is our offensive weapon, providing wisdom, truth, and power to counter lies and temptations.

Praying in the Spirit

Paul concludes his description of the armor with a call to prayer. In Ephesians 6:18, he writes, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Prayer is essential in our spiritual warfare, keeping us connected to God, vigilant, and supportive of one another.

Paul’s Personal Prayer Request

Paul asks the Ephesians to pray for him as well. In Ephesians 6:19-20, he writes, “Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.” Even as a seasoned apostle, Paul recognizes his need for God’s strength and the prayers of fellow believers.

Conclusion

Ephesians 6:10-20 teaches us the importance of being spiritually prepared and equipped with the full armor of God. By standing firm in our faith, embracing God’s truth, and praying continually, we can withstand the enemy’s attacks and live victoriously.
