Welcome to Day 10 of our journey through Ephesians! Today, we explore Ephesians 5:22-6:9, where Paul provides guidance for relationships within Christian households. This passage emphasizes mutual love, respect, and responsibility among family members, highlighting how these relationships reflect Christ’s love and authority.
Wives and Husbands
Paul begins by addressing the relationship between wives and husbands. In Ephesians 5:22-24, he writes, “Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.”
Paul’s call for wives to submit to their husbands is often misunderstood. It’s important to recognize that this submission is grounded in mutual respect and love, reflecting the relationship between Christ and the church.
For husbands, Paul provides a high standard of love. In Ephesians 5:25-28, he writes, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.”
Husbands are called to love their wives sacrificially, just as Christ loved the church. This kind of love is selfless, nurturing, and aimed at the well-being and holiness of the wife.
Children and Parents
Paul continues with instructions for children and parents. In Ephesians 6:1-4, he writes, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise—‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’ Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”
Children are called to obey and honor their parents, recognizing the importance of respect and obedience in the family structure. For parents, especially fathers, the instruction is to nurture and guide their children in the ways of the Lord without provoking them to anger. This balance of discipline and love is crucial for healthy family dynamics.
Slaves and Masters
Paul also addresses the relationship between slaves and masters, which, in the contemporary context, can be applied to employer-employee relationships. In Ephesians 6:5-9, he writes, “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free. And masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.”
Employees are encouraged to work diligently and sincerely, as if serving Christ Himself. Employers, on the other hand, are called to treat their employees with respect and fairness, recognizing their shared accountability to God.
