Welcome to Day 9 of our journey through Ephesians! Today, we delve into Ephesians 5:1-21, where Paul exhorts us to live as children of light, imitating God and reflecting His love and wisdom in our daily lives. This passage provides practical guidance on how to walk in love, live as light in the world, and make wise choices that honor God.

Imitating God

Paul begins with a call to imitate God by living a life of love. In Ephesians 5:1-2, he writes, “Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Imitating God means reflecting His character in our actions, particularly through sacrificial love that seeks the well-being of others.

Living as Children of Light

Paul contrasts the life of a believer with the darkness of the world. In Ephesians 5:3-7, he writes, “But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them.”

Living as children of light means rejecting behaviors that are contrary to God’s holiness. This includes avoiding sexual immorality, impurity, greed, and harmful speech. Instead, we are called to cultivate gratitude and purity in our lives.

The Fruit of Light

Paul further elaborates on what it means to live as light. In Ephesians 5:8-10, he writes, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord.” As children of light, our lives should be characterized by goodness, righteousness, and truth. We are to discern and pursue what pleases God.

Exposing Darkness

Paul encourages believers to expose and reject the deeds of darkness. In Ephesians 5:11-14, he writes, “Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said: ‘Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.’” By living transparently and righteously, we reveal the truth and power of Christ’s light to a dark world.

Walking in Wisdom

Paul concludes this section by urging believers to walk in wisdom. In Ephesians 5:15-17, he writes, “Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.” Walking in wisdom involves making thoughtful, God-honoring choices and understanding His will for our lives.

Being Filled with the Spirit

In Ephesians 5:18-21, Paul writes, “Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Being filled with the Spirit leads to a life of worship, gratitude, and mutual submission, reflecting the character of Christ in our relationships.

Conclusion

Ephesians 5:1-21 challenges us to walk in love, live as children of light, and make wise, Spirit-filled choices. By imitating God and reflecting His love and light, we honor Him and reveal His truth to the world.
