Day 3: The Call to Live as a Living Sacrifice
In Romans 12:1, Paul issues a bold challenge to every believer: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” This call to live as a living sacrifice is central to the Christian life and serves as the foundation for how we should respond to God’s grace.
What Does It Mean to Be a Living Sacrifice?
In the Old Testament, sacrifices were a central part of worship. Animals were offered as sacrifices to atone for sin and to express worship to God. These sacrifices were dead offerings, given once to fulfill the law. However, in Romans 12, Paul calls for something radically different. Instead of a one-time, physical sacrifice, Paul asks us to offer our very lives—our bodies, our minds, and our actions—as living sacrifices to God.
This means that every part of our lives should reflect our devotion to God. Living sacrificially involves surrendering our desires, ambitions, and even our comfort to align ourselves with God’s will. It’s a daily, ongoing act of worship where we choose to honor God with everything we have.
Worship Beyond Sunday
Living as a sacrifice shifts our understanding of worship. Worship is not just what happens on Sunday mornings through singing or attending a service. Worship, according to Paul, is the way we live every day. Offering ourselves as living sacrifices means that our work, our relationships, our decisions, and even how we treat our bodies should be expressions of worship. It’s about dedicating every aspect of our lives to God.
When we live in this way, our entire existence becomes an act of worship. This is what Paul calls “true and proper worship.” It’s not limited to a ritual or event but is a way of life.
The Role of God’s Mercy
Notice how Paul frames this call to sacrifice: “in view of God’s mercy.” Our decision to live as a sacrifice is not motivated by fear, guilt, or duty—it’s a response to God’s incredible mercy. Throughout the book of Romans, Paul has been explaining the depth of God’s grace and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on our behalf. When we truly understand the mercy we’ve received, our natural response is to give our lives back to God in gratitude.
Living sacrificially isn’t about trying to earn God’s love or approval. It’s about responding to the love and mercy we’ve already been given. When we grasp the extent of Christ’s sacrifice for us, our response should be one of total surrender.
Holy and Pleasing to God
Paul also emphasizes that our lives should be “holy and pleasing to God.” Holiness means being set apart—living in a way that reflects God’s character and values. It means resisting the pressures of the world and choosing to follow God’s path, even when it’s difficult or counter-cultural.
When we live in holiness, we reflect God’s nature to the world around us. It’s a call to live with integrity, purity, and love. And when we do this, it pleases God. Our living sacrifice is not one of grudging obligation but of joyful obedience, knowing that our lives bring glory to God.
How This Applies to Us Today
Living as a living sacrifice is challenging. It requires us to give up control and to trust that God’s will is better than our own. It means making daily decisions to follow God, even when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient. But it’s also the most fulfilling way to live. When we surrender to God, we find true freedom, purpose, and joy.
Reflect on what areas of your life God might be calling you to surrender more fully. Are there parts of your life—your time, resources, or relationships—that you’ve been holding back from Him? Living as a sacrifice means laying it all down, trusting that God’s plans for you are better than anything you could imagine for yourself.
Reflection Questions:
- What does living as a “living sacrifice” mean to you personally?
- In what areas of your life is God calling you to surrender or sacrifice for His glory?
- How can viewing your everyday activities as acts of worship change the way you approach life?
Final Thought
Living as a living sacrifice is the essence of Christian discipleship. It’s a call to live fully for God, not out of obligation but out of a deep love and gratitude for the mercy we’ve received. As we continue our journey through Romans, let’s commit to making our lives holy and pleasing sacrifices, fully surrendered to God in every area.
