Welcome to Day 4 of our journey through “Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus: An Inspirational Study on Luke” by Dustin Royer. Today, we explore the miraculous and humble birth of Jesus, the central event in the Gospel of Luke that changed the course of history.
In Luke 2:1-7, we read about the decree from Caesar Augustus that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. This decree requires Joseph, a descendant of David, to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem with Mary, who is expecting a child.
While in Bethlehem, the time comes for Mary to give birth. Due to the crowded conditions, they find no room in the inn, and Mary gives birth to Jesus in a humble stable. She wraps Him in cloths and places Him in a manger.
This scene is filled with profound simplicity and significance. The Savior of the world is born not in a palace, but in a lowly stable, emphasizing God’s approachability and His identification with the humble and the lowly.
Luke 2:8-20 continues with the announcement of Jesus’ birth to shepherds in the fields nearby. An angel of the Lord appears to them, saying:
“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:10-12 NIV)
Suddenly, a great company of the heavenly host appears, praising God and saying:
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2:14 NIV)
The shepherds hurry to Bethlehem and find Mary, Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. They spread the word about what they had been told about this child, and all who hear it are amazed. Mary treasures these things and ponders them in her heart.
The birth of Jesus, announced to shepherds—considered lowly and unimportant in society—highlights the inclusive nature of God’s kingdom. This humble beginning is a reminder of God’s great love for all humanity.
Reflection:
- Read Luke 2:1-20: Reflect on the circumstances of Jesus’ birth and the shepherds’ response.
- Consider: How does the humility of Jesus’ birth impact your understanding of His mission? What can you learn from the shepherds’ eagerness to share the good news?
Prayer/Action:
Pray for a heart that is open to God’s message, no matter how humble or unexpected the circumstances. Reflect on ways you can share the joy of Jesus’ birth with others. Consider acts of kindness and service to those in need, demonstrating the humility and love of Christ.
Tomorrow, we will explore the early years of Jesus and His growth in wisdom and favor. Let’s continue this journey together, marveling at the humble beginnings of our Savior and the profound impact of His birth.
Stay blessed, and see you tomorrow!
