Welcome to Day 5 of our journey through “Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus: An Inspirational Study on Luke” by Dustin Royer. Today, we delve into one of the few glimpses we have of Jesus’ early years, highlighting His growth in wisdom and favor with God and people.
In Luke 2:41-52, we find a unique account of Jesus’ childhood. Every year, His family travels to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. When Jesus is twelve years old, they make their annual trip, but something extraordinary happens.
After the feast, as Mary and Joseph begin their journey home, they realize that Jesus is not with them. Assuming He is among the group of travelers, they search for Him. When they don’t find Him, they return to Jerusalem and, after three days, find Him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them, and asking questions. Everyone who hears Him is amazed at His understanding and His answers.
When His parents see Him, they are astonished. Mary says to Him:
“Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.” (Luke 2:48 NIV)
Jesus replies:
“Why were you searching for me? Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?” (Luke 2:49 NIV)
Mary and Joseph don’t fully understand His response, but Jesus returns with them to Nazareth and is obedient to them. Mary treasures all these things in her heart.
Luke concludes this passage with a significant statement:
“And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” (Luke 2:52 NIV)
This story offers profound insights into Jesus’ early life. Even as a child, Jesus demonstrates a deep understanding of His identity and mission. His time in the temple reveals His divine wisdom and His connection to His Heavenly Father.
Reflection:
- Read Luke 2:41-52: Reflect on the account of Jesus in the temple and His interaction with the teachers.
- Consider: What does Jesus’ response to His parents reveal about His understanding of His mission? How can you seek to grow in wisdom and favor with God and others?
Prayer/Action:
Pray for the wisdom to understand your purpose and mission in life. Reflect on areas where you can grow in wisdom and favor. Consider setting aside time for studying Scripture, prayer, and seeking God’s guidance, just as Jesus did in the temple.
Tomorrow, we will explore the baptism of Jesus and its significance as the beginning of His public ministry. Let’s continue walking together, inspired by Jesus’ example of growth and dedication to His Father’s will.
Stay blessed, and see you tomorrow!
